Easton James' birth story:
I thought I might go into labor on my own because I was having pretty hard contractions the days leading up to Easton's birth. Sometimes they were as close as 2 minutes a part and others 7-10. They'd last about an hour and a half and then stop. The same thing happened with Clayton and Chloe. I'm a long, slow laborer. I spent several hours on Monday at Hoag doing all my pre-op stuff and fetal monitoring. The rest of the day was spent preparing to be gone for 3 days. I packed Clayton and Chloe's "hospital bags" full of toys and goodies, got food for the day ready for them, packed my own bags, Ryan's bag and baby boy or baby girl's bag. I actually had a decent night's sleep. The first part of the pregnancy I thought the baby was a boy, then I thought girl because the baby was measuring about 2 weeks behind my due date. I was diagnosed with Interuterine Growth Restriction at 36 weeks, which meant I had to go to twice weekly fetal monitoring to make sure my placenta was still providing for my baby. All was good every time. I learned from the nurses that it doesn't matter if you are a "6'2 woman from the Netherlands or 5'0 from Japan"...we are all compared to the same measurement. They said it seems like all women who come in with that diagnosis are petite like me. While a little part of me was worried, I knew that everything was fine because Chloe always measured at least 2 weeks behind, while Clayton was about 10 days. Ryan's mom got to our house dark and early at 4:45 and we headed to Hoag. Like he did with the twins, Ryan made a sweet playlist of songs for us to listen to on the way to the hospital. We stopped at Starbucks so Ryan could get a coffee and breakfast that he ate and enjoyed while I was getting all prepped for my c-section. My nurse was wonderful and so sweet, but unfortunately it was shift change, so she didn't assist in the birth. I walked over to the operating room at about 7:15 and all the crazy chaos began. The amount of people it takes to perform a c-section is incredible. They all work fast and do their job quickly. My anesthesiologist was amazing. Since I had an epidural with the twins along with the anesthesia for the c-section, I was incredibly nauseous during their birth and the entire day. For this reason I wore a patch behind my ear along with whatever other drugs the doctor ran through me to help with the nausea. This time around I was completely present in my baby's birth. Once everything was ready, the nurses called for the doctors and they literally started immediately. Dr. Clayton, my OB, is one of the sweetest, calming people I know. Assisting him was Dr. Feldman, who was Kyle and Lindsay's OB. He delivered Jett! Ryan peeked over the sheet a few times, but for the most part stayed focused on me. Once the doctor said the head is out, Ryan watched everything. I was waiting for the "It's a ______" announcement and all I kept hearing was "oh you're perfect, sweetie." Finally, I said, "well, what is it?!" and then they said, "It's a boy!" I think doctors are so accustomed to people knowing the gender, Dr. Clayton forgot I didn't know. Ryan saw the boy parts, but still asked to confirm! Baby Easton James Carlos was born at 7:49 AM, was 6 pounds 11 ounces, 18 inches, had a full head of dark hear, dark skin, and was absolutely perfect! I got to hold him right away and within about 20 minutes or so in recovery I got to do skin to skin and feed him for the first time. Easton did have some fluid in his lungs, which is common for c-section babies, so the nurses monitored him and within the first hour of his life, he had cleared it all out. We went to our room about an hour later where everyone came to meet him. The family was so excited to meet our beautiful third miracle and couldn't believe he was a boy as most of us thought he was a girl! We spent 3 full days and nights in the hospital. I recovered wonderfully this time and didn't need a blood transfusion like I did with the twins. The nurses so graciously took Easton to the nursery every night so Ryan and I could get some sleep. They brought him back for feedings of course, though. Ryan was able to stay with us every night thanks to Nonnie and Grammie who stayed with Clayton and Chloe. We came home on Friday morning to the happy faces of our Clayton and Chloe. They both love Easton so much, especially Chloe who covers him in kisses every day. It's definitely been an adjustment for all of us, but every day gets a little easier. Easton is a great baby. He eats so well and is sleeping perfectly at night. He loves to be swaddled. At his circumcision check-up at 6 days old, he had surpassed his birth weight and was 6 pounds 14 ounces and 19 inches long. I'm thinking his length was measured wrong at his birth. The pediatrician was super impressed with his weight because they don't expect breast fed babies to be back up to their birth weight until they are 2 weeks old. I was excited!
We are so grateful for our sweet little man and thankful God chose us to be his parents. He's our surprise little miracle who we love so very much.
